Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility, or have mentions replaced them?

Last updated: September 14, 2026

Not dead. Demoted. As a signal a language model actually uses, a backlink barely moves the needle: across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found unlinked branded mentions correlate 0.664 with ChatGPT visibility, while domain rating sits at 0.266. The reason is mechanical, not fashionable. A search engine reads the link graph and passes authority along the edges; a model reads text, and a mention is text with or without a hyperlink attached. So the link stopped being the thing the model rewards. What keeps links from hitting zero is a back door: links still drive the Google organic rankings that partly feed AI Overviews, so a strong link profile can carry you into AI answers by way of ranking. That's the whole truth. Links went from the main lever to a side door, and if you have one budget to spend on getting recommended by AI, you spend it on the mention.

The narrow question: are links dead?

"Do links still matter" gets answered two lazy ways. One camp says links are obsolete and posts a mention correlation to prove it. The other says links are eternal and points at Google. Both skip the actual question, which is narrower than either: does a hyperlink, specifically, do anything a plain mention doesn't, when an AI decides whether to name you? Mostly, no. And the "mostly" is the only interesting part.

Why the link, as a link, barely registers

Ahrefs ran Spearman correlations between brand signals and AI visibility across 75,000 brands. The link-based signal, domain rating, is the number an entire industry spent twenty years chasing. It came in at 0.266. Unlinked branded web mentions came in at 0.664. Same study, same brands, same method. The mention out-predicts the link by more than two to one.

Branded web mentions (no link needed)0.6640.7090.656
Domain rating (link authority)0.2660.2850.326

The mechanism explains the gap, and this is the sentence that resolves the debate: a model reads text, not the link graph. When it's asked "best project tool for a small team," it reaches for the names that showed up next to those words across everything it read. The hyperlink is invisible to that process. It's markup wrapped around the words; the words are what got learned. So a backlink, considered purely as a link, contributes almost nothing to whether you get named. Ahrefs' study is here.

The side door: why "dead" is still wrong

Here's where the link-obituary crowd overreaches. Links still do one thing that touches AI, indirectly. Google's AI Overviews are built on top of Google's ranked results, and links are still a real ranking factor for Google. BrightEdge, measuring at the URL level, found that around 54% of AI Overview citations rank organically somewhere in Google's results. So if your links push a page up the rankings, that page is more likely to be sitting in the pool AI Overviews pulls from. The link didn't teach the model your name. It got your page into the room where the model was looking.

That's a real path, and it's why the honest answer is "demoted," not "dead." But notice how indirect it is. Link → ranking → eligible-for-AIO → maybe cited. Three hops, one engine (Google's, not ChatGPT's or Perplexity's), and every hop leaks. The mention is one hop: mention → learned association → named. Most GEO vendors won't put those two paths side by side, because the comparison makes the expensive link campaign look like the long way around.

How we got here

Ahrefs, December 2025 (75,000 brands, Spearman correlations): unlinked mentions 0.664, domain rating 0.266 for ChatGPT. The link-authority score is a quarter of the strength of a plain mention. Incentive noted: Ahrefs sells brand-monitoring, which likes "mentions matter."

BrightEdge, May 2024 to September 2025 (URL-level, 9 industries): ~54% of AI Overview citations rank organically somewhere in Google. This is the mechanism that keeps links relevant, through Google's ranking layer, not through the model directly.

Read together: the two aren't in conflict, they describe two different doors. Ahrefs measures the front door (does the model reward a link) and the answer is barely. BrightEdge measures the side door (do links get you into Google's AIO pool) and the answer is somewhat, on Google only. So "links are dead" is wrong and "links still rule" is wrong. Links are a demoted, Google-only, indirect signal. The one caveat that carries weight: this is correlational, and big brands have both more links and more mentions, so some of the mention correlation is size. But domain rating is the size proxy, and it's the weak leg, which is exactly the wrong pattern for "links secretly still rule."

The honest disagreement

This is the live fight, and it decides your budget:

School A: links still rule, the mention data is a mirage

Correlation isn't causation. Bigger brands have more of everything, so mentions may just track size. Links remain a proven Google ranking factor, and Google's AIO is where most AI citations with traffic actually come from. Keep building links; they're the durable asset, and "mentions" is a repackaging by companies that sell mention-tracking.

School B: mentions have replaced links as the lever

The mechanism is decisive: models learn from text, not link structure, so the unlinked mention is what gets rewarded. A 0.664-vs-0.266 gap is too wide to be all size, especially when domain rating, the size proxy, is the weak number. Links matter now only through the one narrow Google path; for AI broadly, the mention is the currency.

School B is right about the lever, and School A is right about exactly one thing, which is worth naming precisely so nobody torches their SEO on the strength of this page. The "mentions are a size mirage" objection dies on its own evidence: domain rating is the classic measure of how big and established a site is, and it sits at 0.266. If size drove the mention correlation, the size signal would be strong. It's the weakest one in the table. So the mention isn't a proxy for links, it's the thing links were a proxy for. Where School A holds: on Google's AI Overviews specifically, ranking carries over, and links still help you rank, so don't rip out a working SEO program. But that's a reason to keep your links, not a reason to keep buying them for AI. Fresh dollars aimed at getting recommended go to getting mentioned, on the third-party pages the models read, not to a link you're hoping Google will convert into a ranking into a citation three hops later.
