How to track mentions of your personal name online

Updated October 2026 · every tool checked on its own site, October 27, 2026

Set up three free alerts once, then search X and Bluesky yourself when something happens.

The alerts catch new web pages, news, forums and Reddit threads without you looking. They miss most social posts, so those you check by hand, in about five minutes.

Green = the three free alerts. Set them up once and they run on their own.

Step by step: 15 minutes, once

You only do this once, and after that new mentions come to your inbox.

  1. Write down every version of your name

    • Full name in quotes: "Jane Doe". Without quotes you get every Jane and every Doe.
    • Your @handles on each site, plus nicknames and the common misspellings people use.
    • A common name? Add a word that goes with you: "Jane Doe" photographer.
  2. Google Alerts

    • Go to google.com/alerts, type "Jane Doe", open Show options.
    • How often: As-it-happens. Sources: Automatic. How many: All results.
    • Make one alert per version of your name.
  3. Talkwalker Alerts

    • Same names at talkwalker.com/alerts. It also covers forums and X, which Google Alerts doesn't.
    • Free, by email, RSS or Slack.
  4. F5Bot, for Reddit

    • Add your name and your handle at f5bot.com. It watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters.
    • Free forever on the basic plan, no card. Paid plans from $12.99 a month add Slack and Discord.
  5. Google's "Results about you"

    • At goo.gle/resultsaboutyou. You confirm your phone number, home address and email once.
    • Google emails you when results show them, and you can ask for removal in a couple of taps.
    • Needs a Google Account, 18+, in the countries Google supports.
0 social networks

Google Alerts' source list is news, blogs, web, video, books, discussions and finance. Posts on X, Bluesky, Instagram or TikTok don't reach you through it.

Google yourself once a week

A weekly search catches what alerts drop, and it takes two minutes with these searches.

When the free tools aren't enough

Pay for a tool only if your name comes up every week, or if something is happening right now.

  1. It keeps happening: a cheap listening tool

Awario is $29 a month billed yearly and covers Reddit, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and news. The cheaper options, compared.

  2. It's happening now: a trace

Alerts tell you people are talking. They don't tell you who started it or who's carrying it. Pressfront makes Trace, which shows who is talking about you online and where it started, and Get Found, which helps online businesses show up on Google and in AI answers. A free trace looks back 7 days; $49 traces one story all the way back.

Questions

Is there a free way to track mentions of my name?

Yes. Google Alerts, Talkwalker Alerts and F5Bot are free and together cover web pages, news, blogs, forums, some X posts, Reddit and Hacker News. Social posts on X and Bluesky are best checked by searching them directly.

Does Google Alerts track social media?

No. Its sources are news, blogs, web, video, books, discussions and finance. It lists no social network, so posts on X, Bluesky, Instagram or TikTok won't reach you through it.

How often should I check?

Let the alerts run in the background and do a 5-minute search of X, Bluesky and Google once a week. Check daily only while something is actively happening.

Can I see who liked a post about me on X?

No. Since June 2024 X shows a post's likes only to the person who liked it, so no person or tool can list the likers. Replies, quotes and reposts are still public. Bluesky likes are public.
